"Streams continuously reach their goals."
Welcome to Restore that Farm!
That’s just what we are going to do…restore Willow Creek Organic Farm - 19 acres of trees, meadows, a pond and two streams.
It is my hope that you will follow along as we learn the ins and outs of permaculture, guided by “Restoration Agriculture: Real-World Permaculture For Farmers” by Mark Shepard (a great book!) and “Sepp Holzer’s Permaculture: A Practical Guide to Small-Scale Integrated Farming and Gardening” by Sepp Halzer (another great book!).
We will be planting nut producing trees to this beautiful acreage, (which we call “The Land”) along with fruit trees, hazelnut shrubs, berries and grapes. As we go along, we hope to have a couple of steers, a few Tamworth pigs and even turkeys and chickens, who will feast and fatten on the nuts and fruits that are not consumed by my family!
As I don’t even have a barn yet, you can see I have a ways to go. But please, don’t let my inexperience keep you from joining in. We can all learn together!
In truth, I have been studying permaculture for years. Permaculture was coined and developed by Bill Mollison in Australia. But it wasn’t until I read these two new books that I could envision The Land in a thriving, productive permaculture state with hugelcultures (yep! We’ll learn all about them) plus more “accepted” USDA practices of silva culture and alley cropping.
My blog will be used to write about my experiences as well as integrate my entire life - as good sustainable living always does! So you’ll be treated to many photos of the land, the various characters who visit and help me here, and especially my grand-triplets in Denver.
Your contribution is always appreciated either through your comments and suggestions, or if you’re in the area, your brawn. If you have extra materials, like 2x4’s, sitting around that could be used for the barn, bring them over or let us know where we can pick them up.
Restoring The Land will be a slow process…there’s no need to hurry. As we all know, what really is important is the Journey.
