Saturday Party on the Land, Triplets eating in the Round, Weed Whacking

5/20/2012

Dear Reader,
The Land celebrated a beautiful Saturday of 90 degree weather with a little informal get-together with the ever faithful fishermen and their wives. Becky and Smitty brought along dear little Stanley and their new dog, Mazie (spelling?). Chris and Cindy brought along a delicious wine (from August Hill winery in Utica) and cheese, salami and crackers. What a fantastic group! Above, please see the photos from our little bash.  It was great fun and we hope to do it again soon!

The triplets are so funny!  If you look closely at the photo where the triplets are eating in their high chairs, you will see that Jack is telling his sisters something VERY profound. Katie is tilting her head, and Chloe has her fingers on her face thinking it over. They sure are listening very closely to what their brother has to say! Even Einstein feels he is part of it.  Angela entitled this photo "Dinner at the Heim's."

Please note that in the next photo Jack is practicing  sitting up, and it looks like Katie was sitting up and then....over she went!  The next picture shows Jack eating his bananas and avocados. Angela says he loves them! I threw in a few more pics of the triplets - some you may have seen before. Oh, by the way, I bought a weed whacker and have been going crazy with it. I am just a maniac with that thing in my hands! Oh, boy, do I love it. After 15 minutes of using it the very first time, I looked at it and said, "Where have you been all my life?" It is so much FUN! cutting down weeds!

Wow! This weather has been really hot and dry. How we needed the shower we received just this afternoon! I added some photos of the land which I took  in the last week. The last two photos show two different turtles. Look really hard and you can see one in each picture!

On a sad note, all the bluegills who were guarding their nests (and there were LOTS of nests just off shore) are totally gone. Now that the nests are not guarded, their eggs will be eaten, and we will lose a whole  new population of bluegills. I have noticed that all the big bass are gone and same for the catfish.  Yesterday as I left the Land and turned on to Steward Road, there was a  man picking wild asparagus in the ditch. I casually talked with him about how good wild asparagus is,  to which he replied in a smart-aleck way, "Nothing is so good as wild asparagus  AND bluegills." He had his old brown car sitting alongside the road and after he  made such a comment I drove away, past the brown car and saw a woman and a child sitting in it. I had taken one look at this man's mid-section and realized I was looking at one of the  "fake fat buddas." Perhaps, dear Reader, you can put 2 and 2 together. ... Sometimes we just have to remember that what goes around, comes around.

It is late and much cooler after the rain. Good sleeping weather! Nighty-night, dear Reader!

Swarming Bees and a New Adventure for the Triplets

5/10/2012

My dear Reader,
Lest you think that I am still saddened, I want you to know that all is well today. The day dawned bright and sunny and quiet and peaceful, restoring my faith in humanity and the natural world. I still am sad when I think of some of the events lately, but there are so many positive things in the world, I am truly grateful for everything. I have some really good neighbors - Kyle and Jeff down the road, Jenny and Phillip, Kristin and Josh Hickey, Mr. Craddick (who just lost his wife of many years), neighbors on German Road who ride horses, ride their bikes through my land, bring me strawberries and sweet corn...I could go on and on.  There are always bad apples but its time to focus on the sweetness of good neighbors.

I accomplished a lot today - weeding the strawberry patch, mowing at the front of the land, discovering a swarm of bees (not from my own bee hives), buying a nice pot of flowering plants for my dear Mom (she will be  94 in June!),  receiving a call from Jeff (who remembers the kitten incident in Paw Paw very well and was upset about my day yesterday), and a few minutes ago I received two photos from Angela which warmed my heart!

So all is well! First I must tell you about the bees. I talked with Dave Feltes, my expert on all bee related problems, who told me to get two supers and put them on the extra bottom board I have. Then try to get the swarm in the supers by spraying them with lots of sugar water and gently brushing them into the supers. Gentle I was not, but I did manage to get a lot of bees in the makeshift bee hive. But then they re-amassed on the tree AND on a raspberry bush. So I captured more of the bees, and finally gave up. I looked a few minutes ago at the tree  and there was only a small group of bees still swarming there, so I think I did get the queen in the new "hive." What a job! (The first and second photos above show the remainder of the swarms on the tree and in the raspberry bush. The third photo shows my makeshift bee hive where most of the swarm is now, and the 4th photo shows my regular two bee hives.)

As I mentioned, Jeff called to give me moral support and tell me the triplets are just fine. Jack is doing well with his oxygen and is down to 1/8th. Sometimes at night he pulls it off and the monitor never sounds because he's still at 95% even after a half hour or hour. So they think he will be coming off the oxygen one of these days. Hopefully before or around his 1st birthday (like his pediatrician said), which is in about a month.

Angela sent the two photos above with the caption, "First trip to the library." When you are a reader like me, nothing warms the heart more than thinking your grandchildren are being introduced to the library and all the wonderful stories and knowledge a library holds! So that was the perfect way to end the evening for me (and sharing it with you, dear Reader). The  second to the last photo is of the girls and Angela and quite frankly I can't tell which is Chloe and which is Katie! They both look so much alike in this picture. Angela has the most beautiful smile!  The last photo is of Jack, of course, and holding him is Lynette, their nanny, who is fantastic with them. It looks to me that Jack would rather step on his books than read them!

I am catching on to the fact that I have several readers or maybe lots of readers, because everytime I publish my blog, there is an immediate spike on my computer which says "High Computer Use." In fact, I just got on my blog to write tonight, and I had the same thing happen.

So, dear Reader, thank you for being a part of my blog and for caring about life here on the Land. Even though there is sadness in every life and sad things happen here, it still - for the most part - is truly a beautiful paradise. As I mentioned earlier, I am so grateful for all that I have - including YOU!

Sleep tight, dear Reader, and know that all is well.

Sadly no more goslings

5/9/2012

Dear Reader,
This time it's really true. The goslings have all been eaten. I am so sorry to have to report this, but it happened today.

Actually one gosling was missing on Sunday, but each day I checked to be sure the three goslings were still here. Gordon and Gordetta brought them up to me when I put out the bird seed. The 2 pictures above were taken this morning.

I left this morning for DeKalb and noticed a dead raccoon on my lane out to Steward Road. It's so unusual to see dead animals right in  plain sight. Dave and I saw some vultures hovering around Willow Creek a few days ago, and now here is another dead animal. I  think there is another dead one over by the fence, too. It's so strange to have one dead animal, but three or more all at the same time seems so odd.

When I returned from DeKalb this afternoon, I saw 3 or 4 huge (and I mean huge) vultures circling right above the pond. Gordon and Gordetta were in the pond near where the vultures were, but no goslings. I think they had just been eaten by the vultures.  (Don't vultures usually eat dead meat?) Gordon and Gordetta were so quiet and kept swimming in circles. It was horrible to see.

The vultures flew off very quickly after I arrived. The rest of the afternoon I worked outside and Gordon and Gordetta sat on the east bank of the pond and kept looking over to their nest as if they looked long enough the goslings would show up. (See the third photo above) Then the saddest thing happened. As dusk came, Gordon and Gordetta swam over to their nest and just - well, I don't know how else to say it- they keened. They cried, they moaned for the longest time. I put some bird seed out for them, but they refused to come over to eat it. They just kept swimming around and making these awful, moaning low noises.

I have been thinking about all these animals suddenly dying at once and all the vultures. I must tell you, dear Reader, that in almost 40 years I have only seen one or two vultures here. Only one at a time. It is so strange that all these animals died at the same time and showed up in plain sight. What do you make of it?

I do have a couple of stories to relate. One story I may have already told you. When Jack and I were living in Naperville, and I came out to work on the land, I noticed the most beautiful white snowy owl I have ever seen. It was living in a big swamp willow tree behind where the cottage is now. When I was out here, my neighbor came over to do some work for me and I (sadly) mentioned the owl. I wish I had never pointed it out.

When I returned to Naperville, I told Jack and he was so excited about it he decided we would go out the very next day and see it. When we returned to the land, and got close to the tree where the owl lived, the owl was dead at the base of the tree. Jack was so upset. He looked the owl over because he knew - we both knew  based on what we had observed with our neighbors- that our neighbor had killed it. Just for the heck of it. But there was no gun shot hole, there was nothing to show how it died. But it was too coincidental. Perhaps a sling shot, who knows? But Jack was angry because I had told our neighbor about it and in effect, given that poor owl a death sentence. I felt terrible. Hunting  during hunting season is one thing, but to kill a beautiful owl for no reason is quite another. This neighbor didn't have  any chickens or livestock. There was no one else living around the land at that time (in the early '80's before I-39 was even put in). It was a terrible thing to see.

Another story has nothing to do with my present neighbors. We had moved to Paw Paw in 1983, and there was a family down the street who had some mean kids. One of the kids lined up the new baby kittens they had, and hit each one with a steel pipe. It broke one kitten's back.

My kids (and the Safranek kids) came running to me when they found out what had happened. I called Jack and asked if I should go down there and get the kittens. He said absolutely yes. So I went down to this particular house with all my kids and friends, and we took the kittens to my house. We had to take the kitten with the broken back to Doc Brown's vet office in Earlville, and unfortunately he said that kitten would never be right, so we had to put it down. I can't tell you how we all felt.  Some of the kittens went to responsible homes, and we kept "Mew Mew" who died of old age later on. The kid who hit those kittens with the pipe, ended up in jail. All  sociologists say that kids who maim, kill or torture animals will be criminals. In this case, that is exactly what happened.

Pardon me, Dear Reader, for going on and on about this, but for some reason after what I saw today, I can't get these sorry life experiences out of my mind. To change the subject somewhat,I have added some photos of the land taken in the last few days, which elevates my mood a little bit. But if you look at the last row of photos you will see  some disturbing photos (I hope you have the stomach for them). The first photo is of the raccoon on my lane which wasn't there last night, but was there this morning. The second photo is off a little willow which looks like it got hit with herbicide, and the third photo is of a fungus (I am  guessing) that I found behind my giant willow along my western fenceline when I was cleaning out that area. Do any of you knowwhat kind of fungus this is?

Well, Gordon and Gordetta flew off this evening over the house. This is the first time in a long time that they have resumed their ususal night flight. Unfortunately it is because they have lost their whole family.

JJ's birthday was May 6th (Sunday), and I miss him so much. I took  a walk up to  his chapel and thanked him for giving us 32 years on this earth. He was a such a good son. He would have been 38 years old. Jeff and Angela always go out to dinner on JJ's birthday to honor his memory. This year they couldn't do that because of the triplets. So they walked the triplets in their stroller to Starbucks and called me from there. That is the best thing they could have done. JJ loved Starbucks.

I am grieving tonight for JJ, for the goslings. My heart is so heavy.
Good night, dear Reader, good night.

Happiness for Gordon and Gordetta, Triplets are growing up and Smitty's bluegill

Well, well, well, dear Reader! This will teach me to disparage raccoons and my bordering neighbors. I take back what I said about... the raccoons anyway.

Drum roll please!
Please welcome  4 new adorable tiny goslings!
How could I have not seen them? They must have been VERY tiny, for I did not see them yesterday with Gordon or Gordetta, and yet, here they are today...swimming around so nicely. They are so darn cute! Please welcome the newest addition to Willow Creek Organic Farm!

Speaking of cute, Angela sent me some more pictures of Katie, Chloe and Jack. Katie and Chloe's pictures show each of them sitting in the high chair and learning how to hold their bottles and drink water. Such big girls. You can see Jack in the background playing away happy as can be!  The third photo is Daddy holding Chloe and Katie. Chloe seems to be quite taken with her Daddy! And look at how much hair Katie has!

Smitty sent me photos of when he introduced a bluegill he has been raising for 4 years into the pond. It was a momentous time  - both for the bluegill and for Smitty. It was hard for him to let him go! But the bluegill seems to be doing well. Every time Smitty and Chris come out, Smitty makes sure I haven't seen a bluegill floating belly up. Smitty is relieved to know all is well with his bluegill. And I am so please that Smitty wanted to release his bluegill in my pond!

So, after I thought we had a tragedy, I am happy to report that all is well here. I worked outside most of the day and enjoyed myself so much. It was a really warm, neat day! This evening Gordon and Gordetta brought their offspring closer so I could see them. How sweet those little goslings are!

Dear Reader, have a wonderful night knowing all is well in Paradise!

Sad Day for Gordon and Gordetta

5/2/2012

Dear Reader,
I am sorry to have to tell you that Gordetta's eggs - or the newborn goslings - are no longer.  It is terribly sad. Gordon and Gordetta seem to be stunned...just floating around  - looking lost. She worked so hard on those eggs for so many weeks.

I'm not quite sure what happened. I noticed Gordon was staying closer to her in the last few days, so I thought the birth of the goslings may be near. I was gone this morning, and Gordetta was still on the eggs when I returned, I started pruning the bank of the pond. This is the area where  my dear neighbors have created deep holes to hide in among the tall grass. In fact I saw someone casting his fishing line from that area just last year. He pulled  his line back quickly when he realized I was coming outside my door. Unfortunately I couldn't catch him, as the path was quite full of foliage and he got away.. .

Anyhoo, today I started to  hand cut the weeds back, and Gary's friends and planes were going over and over my head like they were crazy. I don't know what their problem was...in fact I was concentrating on what I was doing (and actually enjoying cleaning up the bank) when I realized they were flying around and around and back and forth. My other neighbors were home, too, driving up and down the road. Strange day.  But I didn't give it much thought as I was really into what I was doing.

After so many hours of work, I noticed Gordetta was sitting across the pond from her nest with Gordon. She stayed a long time. I thought to myself, "oh, oh, this doesn't seem like a good thing."

So I went to peer at her nest, and all 4 of her eggs were cracked open, and no goslings. It could be raccoons of course, but this happened in the daytime, not at night. Three of  Gordetta's eggs were still in the nest and one was a foot away in the weeds. I can't tell if parts of the goslings are still in the eggs or not, but I did take the photos above to show you. About 20 feet from Gordetta's nest I found a foot print or a knee print  in the dirt which wasn't there before. I'm not sure what to make of it.

So, dear Reader, I feel I had to share this with you. If this were done by animals, then we have to realize that is an occurance of nature. But if it were done by a human being, it is the most shameful thing.

I am feeling sad that there are no goslings for Gordon and Gordetta. I know  you are, too.
