I am sorry to have to tell you that Gordetta's eggs - or the newborn goslings - are no longer. It is terribly sad. Gordon and Gordetta seem to be stunned...just floating around - looking lost. She worked so hard on those eggs for so many weeks.
I'm not quite sure what happened. I noticed Gordon was staying closer to her in the last few days, so I thought the birth of the goslings may be near. I was gone this morning, and Gordetta was still on the eggs when I returned, I started pruning the bank of the pond. This is the area where my dear neighbors have created deep holes to hide in among the tall grass. In fact I saw someone casting his fishing line from that area just last year. He pulled his line back quickly when he realized I was coming outside my door. Unfortunately I couldn't catch him, as the path was quite full of foliage and he got away.. .
Anyhoo, today I started to hand cut the weeds back, and Gary's friends and planes were going over and over my head like they were crazy. I don't know what their problem was...in fact I was concentrating on what I was doing (and actually enjoying cleaning up the bank) when I realized they were flying around and around and back and forth. My other neighbors were home, too, driving up and down the road. Strange day. But I didn't give it much thought as I was really into what I was doing.
After so many hours of work, I noticed Gordetta was sitting across the pond from her nest with Gordon. She stayed a long time. I thought to myself, "oh, oh, this doesn't seem like a good thing."
So I went to peer at her nest, and all 4 of her eggs were cracked open, and no goslings. It could be raccoons of course, but this happened in the daytime, not at night. Three of Gordetta's eggs were still in the nest and one was a foot away in the weeds. I can't tell if parts of the goslings are still in the eggs or not, but I did take the photos above to show you. About 20 feet from Gordetta's nest I found a foot print or a knee print in the dirt which wasn't there before. I'm not sure what to make of it.
So, dear Reader, I feel I had to share this with you. If this were done by animals, then we have to realize that is an occurance of nature. But if it were done by a human being, it is the most shameful thing.
I am feeling sad that there are no goslings for Gordon and Gordetta. I know you are, too.
